Serial Cables Null vs Straight through
The information here is intended for use with the receiver's program loading and not for actual viewing TV, as some new units now use a dongle which connects to the receiver via a serial cable and that is of the Straight Thru Serial type (i believe that is always the case, but this is not a confirmed fact)
. In other words, don't use the list below to connect a dongle to your receiver, it could be wrong.
Use the cable that came with the dongle in those cases
Null Modem Cable (called a "cross-over" or "twisted pair"):
Has 9 pins, two of which are crossed. Only 3 pins are actually being used.
Pin 2 to Pin 3 (crossed)
Pin 3 to Pin 2 (crossed)
Pin 5 to Pin 5
Straight through Serial Cable:
Has 9 pins, all of which directly correspond to the pins on each end.
An Ohms meter will tell you which is which. Simply connect your meter to both ends of the cable to see if all pins match or the pin 2 and 3 are crossed.
There is also a program you can find on the net that will tell you which type you have. You would need a PC with two serial ports for this program to work.
Male or female ends are not an indication of which type of cable it may be.
-- Below is a list (incomplete) of which cable any given FTA receiver uses for program loading (file loading).
